A Tennessee deputy was critically injured when he was dragged roughly the length of a football field over the weekend by a driver, who he shot and killed.

The incident happened just after 9 a.m. Saturday when a Shelby County sheriff's deputy pulled over a motorist for an unspecified reason, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports. During the stop, the driver tried to flee the scene, and the deputy was caught in the door of the suspect's vehicle.

The deputy was dragged around 100 yards, but he was able to reach his weapon and open fire. The driver was struck by the gunfire, and his car crashed into a parked vehicle.

Both men were rushed to the hospital, and the driver died in transit. Sheriff Floyd Bonner praised a bystander, who attended to the deputy at the scene and used the officer's radio to call for help.

The deputy is in critical but stable condition, according to Bonner. He was expected to undergo surgery Saturday night.

"This is another tragic and sad example of the violence against our law enforcement officers and citizens that has become all too common in our community,” said Bonner.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.
